Faithful Rebekah

Do you remember who we talked about last time? Sarah, and how she couldn’t have a baby. But at an old age, she gave birth to Isaac (the one who brings laughter)?

We’re going to continue on with this story and talk about another courageous girl of the Bible.

So, Isaac grew up and his father, Abraham, knew he would want to be married. Abraham was worried Isaac would marry a woman from Canaan (this town the Lord had brought them to). Abraham wanted Isaac to marry a woman from his home town and from a relative.

Abraham decided to ask one of his servants to travel back to his home town and find a woman for Isaac to marry. The servant he asked was very nervous he wouldn’t find a woman who would be willing to travel back to marry Isaac. But, Abraham told him to try and if he couldn’t find a woman that would be ok. Abraham sent his servant with 10 camels and several gifts to give to the family of this woman.

The servant traveled and arrived at Abraham’s home town. He stopped at a well for water, just at the time the women came to draw water from the spring. (One of the jobs of younger women back then, was to go to the well to collect water for their families and animals.)

Right then, the servant prayed to Abraham’s God and asked him for help. He told the Lord he would ask one of these women to give him a drink and she would offer him one. Then she would offer to water his camels. If this happened, the servant would know this was the woman for Isaac. Even before the servant stopped praying, a beautiful, young woman, named Rebekah, came to the well for water. The servant approached her and asked for a drink. She said, “yes, my Lord.” And lowered her jug from her head. She then said, “I will water your camels too until they have enough to drink.”

*Did you know that camels can drink up to 25 gallons of water? And they don’t store it in their hump like people think. They actually store it in their blood steam and slowly use it as they need it. It comes in handy when they’re walking through the dessert.

Now, I’m not sure how much water Rebekah gave to those camels, but the servant watched her wondering if this was an answer to his prayer. He asked Rebekah where she was from and she told him. She was from Abrahams family and village. She invited the servant and his camels back to her home to stay. The servant praised the Lord for His goodness!

Once the servant arrived at Rebekah’s home, he told Rebekah and her family who he was and his intention of looking for a wife for Isaac. The family was happy. Rebekah and her family were willing to let her go to Canaan and marry Isaac.

When Rebekah got close to Canaan, Isaac looked up and saw her on the camel. The servant told him everything. And Isaac was happy to make Rebekah his wife and loved her very much. Later on Rebekah gave birth to twins, Esau and Jacob.

What Rebekah did seems really small right? Saying yes, to giving a stranger at the well a drink? That doesn’t seem like such a big deal? (Maybe watering the camels was a big job?) But that small little thing produced a big thing to happen in her life.

Rebekah was faithful in a little thing, so God trusted her and she became part of God’s family by helping make a way for Jesus to come generations later.

If we can be faithful in little things, then God knows we will be faithful in big things. Sometimes it’s the little things that are harder to be faithful in.

But there’s no better time to start than now. Being courageous girls who can be faithful in little things!

What are some of those ways?

Being honest… all the time. You know those little lies that sneak out of our mouths. Lets be truth tellers.

Being obedient in all things. (And how about doing them right away, all the way & with a joyful heart.)

Being kind…it’s easy to be kind to people who are kind to you, but what about being kind to those who aren’t?

Doing a little more than what’s required.

Blooming Challenge: I encourage you to watch what happens in your life when you are faithful in the little things. Watch how God uses you, just like He used Rebekah.
