Have you ever been in a sticky situation where everyone around you is doing the wrong thing? You know it’s wrong and you want to do the right thing… but it’s hard, because you don’t want to be different.
Imagine a world where everyone was sinning and doing very bad things. Every. Single. Person. I think it would be a very scary place. You couldn’t trust anyone: your neighbors, friends, and maybe your own family.
Well, this is what it was like in the time of Noah. God saw it, and all this human wickedness made God sad. He was sorry that He made people and it truly broke His heart. He wanted to wipe out every living thing, all the people, all the animals…but Noah~Noah found favor with God. You see, Noah was a noble, honorable, blameless, and righteous man. He actually was the only one like that. And Noah knew God, trusted God, and obeyed God.
So, God told Noah to build a boat and He gave Noah all the instructions. God told Noah He was going to cover the earth with a flood that would destroy all living things. God also told Noah that He would guarantee His promise with Noah, Noah’s wife, sons and their wives.
Noah had a family. He had a wife, 3 sons and 3 daughter-in-laws. And it seems they all knew God. We don’t know much about Noah’s wife, we don’t even know her name… but try to imagine what it was like to be her.
You’re living in a very wicked time. It must have been hard to live in an evil time like that. You’re going along with life and doing your best to obey God, raising your kids to love God. And then God tells your husband to build a boat. You know you’re going to help, even if you’re really old (because Noah was around 500 years old). The boat was a huge boat and it was going to take a long time to build.
Can you imagine what all the people were saying about this craziness? Do you think people poked fun at Noah, his wife and family?Just think about when you hear about something really crazy, what do you do? Most of the time we go and tell someone else. “Hey, did you hear about Noah, building a boat where there’s no water?”
I think that Noah’s wife must of been really strong and brave. She stood by her husband. She did what was right, even when no one else was doing it. She most likely endured a lot of teasing and shaming. She must of been patient too, because the boat took almost 100 years to build.
But, we see God’s mercy here. His love for all of His people. He was giving them time to turn their hearts to Him. When something crazy is happening, word spreads, right? So, as Noah built the boat, people probably came to see. This gave Noah, his wife and children an oppurtunity to share about their God and His love for them. I can imagine Noahs wife sitting and talking with other ladies. And 100 years is a long time for God to give His people a chance to change. In the end, they didn’t, and they continued to do what was wrong.
Through it all, Noah’s wife never lost faith in God and she continued obeying God. Noah’s wife did what was right, even when no-one else did. She didn’t do wrong, even when everyone else did.
You know the rest of the story. Noah and his family finished the boat and loaded it up with food for themselves and the animals. Then the animals went on 2 by 2, a male and female of each kind. Noah’s family entered the boat and God closed the door. God brought the rain and flood waters for 40 days and 40 nights. Everything living was destroyed...except Noah, his family and the animals on the boat. They ended up living on the boat for 150 days while they waited for the water to go down. I bet Noah’s wife worked really hard with her family feeding all the animals, feeding her family and cleaning up all the mess. She was a strong, brave woman.

We can learn so much from Noah’s wife. She loved God and did the right thing, even when no-one else did. Do you want to know how we can show love to God just like Noah’s wife? God’s love language is obedience. His word says… “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” That’s how we can show love to God. And it isn’t always easy, especially when no-one else is doing it. But, that’s exactly what Noah and his wife did. And God blessed them. Because God’s word says… Obedience brings blessings. Deuteronomy 11:26-28 "Obey and you will be blessed.”
Now, whenever you’re in that sticky situation, remember how you can show God you love Him, by obeying His commands, just like Noah’s wife. You can be strong and brave, just like her. And choose right, even when everyone else is choosing wrong.
Lord God,
Be with us today… we know how much you love us, help us never to forget. Help us to always choose to obey and follow your commandments even in sticky situations. Not just because it brings blessing, but because we love you. Help us to show our love for you.
Thank you for being a God who is merciful, loving and full of goodness. Thank you for being the God we can walk with and who is active in our lives. You deserve all glory forever. In Jesus name, Amen
